This decorative technique is one of the earliest forms of surface embroidery traditionally worked in crewel wool on linen. The technique was popular in the seventeenth century when designs were based on patterns from Indian chintz. Today the traditional designs are popularly known as Jacobean, but crewel work can be used very effectively for contemporary designs.
