Raised Embroidery - starts 05 May
Learn the history of this fascinating miniature raised embroidery technique combined with the practicalities of designing and stitching your own heirloom of the future with Jenny Adin-Christie.
Miniature raised embroidery, often referred to as 'stumpwork' was at its height of popularity in England during the 17th century between 1640 and 1680. These designs have a strong sense of narrative and provide fascinating insight into period life. Raised embroidery has also enjoyed a significant revival in recent years with embroiderers revelling in the fascinating stitches and the scope to tell a contemporary story in stitch.
The course is suitable for both beginners and those with greater experience and you can choose to study either of the following projects:
1) A raised embroidery sampler - this will serve as an invaluable reference for future work but will also form an attractive finished piece in its own right. A design will be provided so lesson time can be concentrated on learning technique.
2) A personal raised embroidery project, from the design and planning stages to the execution.
The final outcome of the course will depend on the size of project selected and the time available between lessons. You may wish to embark on a large project and concentrate mainly on design and planning. Or you can select a small project to design and plan at the first lesson and then progress with stitching over the remaining four practical sessions. If you select this option you will need to supply the tutor with your design ideas as early as possible before the start of the course for help with pre-planning and advice on materials and equipment required.
Every Wednesday for six weeks from 05 May to 09 June - £498.00
