Ribbon embroidery dates back to the mid 17th century and can give a three-dimensional finished piece. RSN ribbon embroidery classes are indicating a resurgence of interest in this technique.

Wool has been used for centuries. William Morris and Walter Crane created designs to be produced in wool by the RSN, some of which were displayed in Philadelphia in 1876 taking art needlework to the USA. In 2009 the RSN created hangings for the Great Tower at Dover Castle in Kent using wool to embroider in the 12th century style.

Now the most common natural fibre in the world, cotton is used for everything from jeans to christening robes. In embroidery, cotton thread offers an alternative to silk for fine work, especially whitework.

Silk has been used in embroidery for even longer than wool, making it's way across the Silk Route from China.
It is used in embroidery not only because it takes colour well, but also for its sheen and its ability to be worked very finely. It is particularly beautiful when used in silk shading. The RSN was recently asked to produce a contemporary Tudor Rose in sillk shading which was displayed at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
