Third Year Syllabus

 

By the beginning of the third year you will have built up a substantial knowledge of all the embroidery techniques. This will be combined with sound design ability, experience and the confidence to complete a piece of work using your own initiative. Throughout the final year of the Apprenticeship the emphasis is on professional workroom practices.

Studio

During the third year you will work on various commercial projects, including new commissions and the conservation of various textiles from both the RSN Collection and private and corporate clients.

Work Experience

Each Apprentice will be expected to complete at least two weeks of relevant work experience in an area of specific interest. Previous Apprentices have worked for The National Trust, Royal Opera House and The Textile Conservation Studio, as well as exhibition companies, designers, manufacturers and museums.

Business Studies

The business studies programme is particularly aimed at those considering a freelance career in embroidery or teaching.

Presentation and Teaching Skills

You will have the opportunity to assist with the preparation and teaching of RSN classes for the general public and in private one-to-one lessons in your specialist technique. You will also assist in leading small group tours of the RSN Workroom. Throughout the year the RSN attends specialist stitching shows and exhibitions and there will be hands-on experience in exhibition design, setting up displays, demonstrating embroidery techniques and helping to promote the RSN and the Apprenticeship.

Assessments

External examiners will complete the final assessment and the Diploma awarded accordingly.
