Tuition

The first two years of study are each divided into three terms and you will be expected to attend all weekly lessons between 9am and 5pm.

First Year Embroidery Techniques

These will include:- canvas work, Jacobean/crewel work, blackwork, traditional goldwork, appliqué, whitework, creative smocking, and natural silk shading. Lessons are also given in stretching and mounting work for presentation. A file of supporting course work is also required.

Second Year Embroidery Techniques

During the second year the course covers more advanced embroidery techniques of fine whitework, three dimensional box construction, stumpwork and traditional regimental and church work techniques. A course work file will again be required.

Art & Design

A strong emphasis is placed on drawing, colour and design skills, which will assist in the design of your own work. Other subjects including packaging design, paper and felt making are included to compliment the embroidery techniques that you learn at the School.

Educational Visits

These are organised each term and provide the opportunity to gain inspiration from various external sources for individual projects. Visits are to museums, exhibitions, places of interest and specialist stitching shows.

Computer Studies

You will learn how to design and chart a needlework kit using the computer together with an introduction to designing with a computerised sewing machine. Computers are available for typing course work notes and research. An extensive library of specialist embroidery books and design resources is also available.

Group Projects

A group project is set each year using the combined skills of all three years working as a team to produce a major piece for the RSN's Collection. The brief is usually for the design and production of a costume or accessories.

Your work will be assessed at the end of each term by an experienced external examiner.
